Yoga can improve sleep quality and endurance of cancer survivors.

Reports say that cancer survivors can cut down on sleep medications once they start specialized yoga programs.

A recent study attempted to validate the relationship between yoga and sleep quality. It was the biggest examination that was specifically designed for cancer survivors.

Yoga participants were able to decrease their use of sleep medication by more than 20 percent compared to the control group, who increased medication by 5 percent.

The results of the study will be presented at the upcoming American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 46th Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois.

“This is a readily applicable approach that improves quality of life and reduces medicine intake in cancer survivors. This is a real positive,” explained Dr. George W. Sledge Jr., president-elect of ASCO.

“Physicians frequently have trouble discussing these approaches [yoga] with patients, but this study applies real science to the issue,” said Dr. Sledge. He continued: “this emphasizes the increasing importance of ameliorating complications of therapy in long-term cancer survivors, as there are literally millions of patients to whom this might be applicable in the United States.”
