Dropping a few pounds won’t just improve aesthetics.

According to experts, it could also lead to treat sleep apnea, a sleep disorder wherein a person has a hard time breathing in short periods during the night.

Doctors have now linked weight loss to treating sleep apnea. Research from the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University says that the effect of weight loss is significant to this sleep disorder.

The study found that patients who lost the recommended amount of weight had a significant improvement in their sleep apnea condition over a period of twelve months.

The research structured the test subjects into two groups.

The first group, who were required to lose 24 pounds or more, said that their sleep apnea conditions greatly decreased. In other cases, weight loss was the only treatment necessary to eliminate sleep apnea conditions.

The second group, which was required to lose less than a pound, actually experienced worse sleep apnea symptoms.
