According to Swedish research, a weight loss diet can help treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among obese men.

The trial found that those who had improved their weight loss had significant improvement on their sleep apnea condition.

Research from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm conducted the study on 63 obese men aged 30-65 years. Each of the participants had OSA and they were initially being treated with continuous positive airway pressure.

30 of the participants were treated with a liquid diet for seven weeks to promote weight loss. The remaining men acted as a control group by adhering to their usual diet for the past nine weeks.

During the ninth week, the diet group lost an average of 41.2 pounds. This group also displayed a reduction in the number of OSA episodes. On the other hand, the control group saw an average weight reduction of 2.4 pounds and also experienced less OSA episodes.

After the trials, five in the diet group were free from sleep apnea, while only one patient lost his condition from the control group.

The results were published in the British Medical Journal.
