Aside from improving health, a recent pilot study argues that treating sleep apnea may also improve one’s golf game.
During the trials, 12 golfers with different degrees of sleep apnea were treated. After the treatment, the group of golfers reduced their handicap averages from 12.4 to 11.0.
“For a golfer, that’s not a small change, but it’s not a huge change,” said Dr. Marc Benton from the Atlantic Sleep & Pulmonary Associates in Madison, New Jersey.
There was also a control group of golfers who did not have obstructive sleep apnea had no change in their handicaps.
The preliminary results indicated that improving their golf game was a motivation for patients to keep up the treatment, Benton said.
Dr. Benton said that he has been advising his golfer patients for years to get treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, because it will allow them to overcome functional obstacles sourced from the disorder.
When two of Benton’s patients said that their golf game improved after the treatment, the doctor decided to perform the study.
