A new study indicates the importance of treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in truck drivers, including economic, health, and safety benefits. The study was published in the May Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

The study was led by Dr. Benjamin Hoffman and used insurance claims records to analyze the effects of OSA treatments in truck drivers.

For 156 drivers that underwent continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or other OSA treatments, health plan costs decreased by $2,700 during the first year and $3,100 in the succeeding year. On the other hand, 92 drivers who were not treated with OSA had no changes in terms of costs.

The treated drivers also missed fewer work days and less short-term disability costs.

“Addressing OSA in the workplace offers the possibility of early identification and intervention for a chronic disease that is associated with increased health benefit utilization,” explained the research team.
