Science has another possible treatment in store for patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). If successful, it will help millions of Americans who are facing the dangers of sleeping disorders each and every night. The device, which will supposedly zap the tongue of the user during sleep, shall stop apnea dead in its tracks to ensure a good night’s sleep.
The dangers of apnea occur when tongue and throat muscles relax. The tissues along the air passage soften and collapse, thus creating an obstruction. The phenomena can last up to half a minute, and can repeat itself up to 30 times or more during a single hour. It results in the patient struggling and waking up.
Around 100 apnea patients will be subjected to tests with the device. Its design involves having a tiny generator strapped near the patient’s collarbone and a wire running up to a nerve under the jaw. With power just enough to stimulate the nerve that controls tongue muscles, researchers hope the device will be able to treat apnea for good.
