Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport has opened its Sleep Disorder Laboratory.

The facility is now available for diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, snoring, narcolepsy, and insomnia.

“Recognizing and treating some sleep disorders in the early stages may prevent more serious cardiovascular and neurological problems, which can be very expensive to treat,” explained Dr. Edgar Haywood, the President and CEO of Dosher Memorial Hospital. “We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Barton L. Schneyer, MD, Board Certified Pulmonologist, serving as the medical director for our Sleep Disorder Laboratory, giving us the opportunity to improve patient access and expand our preventative commitment to include sleep diagnostics.”

According to Dr. Schneyer, around 10 percent of American adults suffer from some form of sleep disorder. And if this is left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems, including heart problems and obesity.

Of the many sleep disorders, sleep apnea is the most common. Its treatments range from airway pressure appliances to light therapy.
