Sleepy drivers as dangerous as drunk drivers

Students from Cal State Fulerton are no strangers to drunk and sleepy drivers. Both states are no different from each other once a driver gets behind the wheel. A study conducted by Stanford University researchers back in 1999 says that “a person who drives while in need of sleep often times can be as dangerous as a person who drives drunk.”

The study also found that the reaction time that both sleepy and drunk drivers have are almost similar to a person who is too drunk to drive. The researchers studied 113 people suffering from sleep apnea and compared data with those from 80 participants who volunteered to be intoxicated with alcohol.

Each of the participants from both groups was asked to push on a button continuously for ten minutes in order to test their reaction speed. Results show that patients that had apnea scored much worse on the test as compared to participants whose blood alcohol levels were 0.05 below the legal toxicity limit.
