According to a new government study, Oklahoma residents need more sleep.
The state-by-state study confirmed that West Virginia has doubled the rate of sleeplessness. But Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Virginia have gone above average.
Dr. Johnathan Schwartz says that sleep disorders are often correlated with health issues, like obesity.
“People who are overweight, tend to exercise less,” said the doctor from Integris Sleep Disorders Clinic. “And it also increases further sleep disorders such as snoring and sleep apnea which can further disturbed sleep.”
Schwartz believes that lack of sleep can also lead to obesity. And he says that eating fatty foods can be a consequence of fatigue—because it disrupts hormones.
Dr. Schwartz says: “Poor quality of sleep decreases leptin levels which help to increase metabolism and an increase of something called ghrelin which increases the fat lay down.”
The doctor had simple tips for people who want to sleep longer—reduce intake of alcohol and nicotine.
