Sleep disorders may precede dementia or Parkinson’s disease.
According to US researchers, sleep disorders can signal dementia or Parkinson’s up to 50 years before their actual diagnosis.
Mayo Clinic researchers found an average interval between the start of the sleep disorder to the symptoms of dementia and Parkinson’s.
The study, which was published in Neurology, also linked sleep disorders to the development of multiple system atrophy.
One of the most common symptoms among the study participants was rapid eye movement, a sleep disorder behavior.
However, authors say that more research is needed to support the claims. They suggested that scientists should begin to develop treatments to slow down the progression of sleep disorders, because this might prevent future neurological diseases.
