The Sleep Center at Oro Valley has continued to make great strides since its establishment last year.
The center has now extended its hours of operation from three nights a week to six nights last March. It has completed 74 sleep studies for patients of many ages. Plans to upgrade increase the facilities are now under discussion.
“We see ourselves as an interdisciplinary center,” said John Worden, the hospital’s cardiopulmonary director. “There are many [sleep disorder] testing centers out there. We’re much more than that.”
Initial patient evaluations may or may not suggest the need for one to two night non-invasive procedures. Whenever an over night study is performed, it usually confirms the initial diagnosis.
The rooms of the facility are designed to create a home environment for patients.
In a control room, technicians analyze and interpret information obtained from patients.
“Our most common patient is one with sleep apnea,” explained Dr. Locher. “Then, in order, come patients with insomnia, restless leg syndrome and internal clock rhythm problems.”
The ages of the patients have been varying. One doctor says that he has dealt with sleep apnea patients as young as 16 years old and as old as 70 years old.
