According to recent studies, sleep apnea is closely linked to a reduction in lifespan and this condition could accurately be diagnosed by snoring activities.

Patients with sleep apnea need intensive tests, which can be obtained from any sleep center.

Doctors examine sleep breathing patterns to diagnose the severity of the condition, wherein the throat wrongly closes over causing the patient to start and briefly wake.

Now, researchers have designed a computer programme, which analyzes the patient’s snoring patterns to diagnose the illness.

The system was accurate in nine out of ten cases.

The results of the study were presented at a conference in Melbourne, Australia. It will help people around the country aware of the problems that sleep apnea poses.

“An accurate device to diagnose sleep apnoea from recordings of snoring would be extremely helpful,” says Dr. Neil Stanley, a sleep expert. “Many patients are told about their snoring by their bed partner, but some can go years not even realising there is a problem, only that they are constantly exhausted.”

He concluded: “Such a device this could also mean that we are forced to revise upwards the number of people that we think have this condition.”
