Sleep apnea linked to transport accidents  | read this item

Governments should start checking truck drivers, bus drivers, commercial pilots, and sailors for sleep apnea, a disorder that is often attributed for several transport accidents.

The National Transportation Safety Board recently addressed this by sending a letter to the responsible federal agency. In the letter, the NTSB cited accident cases wherein sleep apnea was a big factor.

The condition causes loss of breath, which can interrupt sleep and increase fatigue.

The letter recommended the regulator to screen transport drivers for sleep apnea during annual medical checks. Hopefully, implementing the program will lessen transport accidents.

According to NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman, sleep apnea has been implicated in several transport accidents, spanning different transportation modes.

Earlier this year, NTSB sent similar recommendations to the Federal Aviation Administration.
