[PRLog press release] — The Singapore Sleep Awareness Week 2010 is organized by Singapore Sleep Society in celebration of World Sleep Day on 19 March 2010. The 10-day campaign will be held in Singapore from 19 to 28 March 2010. The inaugural campaign is intended to be a celebration of sleep and a call to action on important issues related to sleep, including disorders, treatments, education and perception. The campaign feature sleep-related activities including the Good Sleep for Good Health Public Sleep Symposium, the online Sleep An Hour More Movement and Visit A Sleep Lab programme.

“Sleep disorders are common and often overlooked, with approximately 30% of the population worldwide suffering from different sleep problems.” Said Dr Lim Li Ling, President of Singapore Sleep Society, “There is a general lack of understanding of sleep-related health issues in Singapore and we hope Singapore Sleep Awareness Week will provide a platform for Singaporeans to find out more on how to achieve good sleep for good health.”

The theme “Good Sleep for Good Health” provides the focus for this year’s Sleep Awareness Week. This nation-wide campaign aims to educate the Singapore public on better understanding of common sleep problems, the symptoms of sleep disorders, the recommended treatments and last but not least, to dispel myths.

Dr Ignatius Mark, Chairman of Singapore Sleep Awareness Week Organising Committee said, “It is a misconception that lack of sleep or not having good sleep quality is acceptable and a normal part of aging. As a matter of fact, good sleep is a very important for good health and the lack of awareness may cause sleep disorders to remain unrecognized and undiagnosed.”

The Singapore Sleep Awareness Week 2010 will be a 10-day long campaign featuring sleep-related activities to make learning about sleep disorders accessible, informative, interactive, and interesting to the public. Some of the event highlights include the Good Sleep for Good Health Public Sleep Symposium, the online Sleep An Hour More Movement and Visit A Sleep Lab programme.

The campaign will also launch a comprehensive portal on sleep-related issues – www.singaporesleepsociety.com/ssaw2010 – to provide the public with easy and quick access to resources online. The portal offers an interactive destination for the public to seek advice from medical professionals through the online sleep forum; get tips to achieve better sleep; find out more about sleep disorders and learn about treatments for sleep problems.
