Did you know that one in every four individuals working non-traditional shifts have shift work sleep disorder (SWSD)?
This sleep disorder is characterized by difficulty in focusing, increased irritability, and poor work performance. The condition is not as easy to treat as it seems. Setting your alarm clock will do little or none at all to help you.
SWSD is one of the main proponents of daytime sleepiness. Other reasons include the following sleep disorders: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy, and insomnia.
There are many medications available for sleep disorders in the market, but there is nothing specific for SWSD. Plus, these pills can trigger allergic reactions linked to syndromes and side effects.
The best way to avoid SWSD is to regulate your body clock to your work hours—which is again not easy, especially for night shift employees.
