Anne Ferro said that fatigue-related crashes need to be reduced in the trucking industry, as the administrator spoke at the Sleep Apnea & Trucking Conference in Baltimore.
“There is no silver bullet … but what we need to strive for is silver buckshot,” said Ferro. She feels that more research, programs, events, and targeted outreach and intervention will reduce drowsy driving accidents.
Around 30 percent of drivers suffer from severe sleep apnea, according to FMCSA research.
Ferro says that the challenge for FMCSA is to implement affordable solutions to help the trucking industry.
According to National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Christopher Hart, fatigue and sleep apnea are major problems of the trucking industry. Hart says that regulators need better awareness and better treatments to address the problem properly.
Hart also proposed that the FMCSA incorporate new sleep disorder suggestions in an online medical examiner book.
