Nurses can go up to 24 hours without any sleep due to the nature of their job. A new study suggests that this kind of work strategy for graveyard shifters is not the best type to benefit nurses and shift workers in general.
The study, which is the first of its kind, looks at strategies that evening nurses pull off to manage night and day sleep cycles. It involves 400 nurses filling out questionnaires regarding their sleeping habits. The American researchers revealed that there have been a number of studies in the past which have proven that frequent misalignment of the circadian system will not benefit health.
Circadian misalignment has been found to be closely related to the development of mental health disorders, cancer, gastrointestinal and metabolic disorders, as well as cardiovascular diseases. Team members from Vanderbilt University Medical Center explain that they “were very surprised to find nurses’ second most frequent strategy was the ‘no sleep’ strategy that often involved staying awake for the 12 hours before starting the night shift. That means they are skipping sleep for at least 24 hours straight.”
