New Zealanders may be unwittingly suffering from poorly designed pillows, losing precious hours of sleep. The New Zealand Chiropractors’ Association say that using improper pillows is usually the cause for neck and back pain and can also cause severe impact on sleep quality and duration thus causing fatigue and other health disorders.
Researchers from Massey University Sleep Wake Centre, 37 percent of adults in New Zealand, aged 30 to 60, suffer from sleep disorders while 25 of adults, aged 20 to 60, experience insomnia. There have also been other studies that show how proper pillows can help reduce discomfort, restlessness, shoulder and arm pain, as well as headaches during and after bedtime.
Chiropractors agree that people should be educated on how to pick the right pillow. New Zealand Chiropractors’ Association spokesman Dr. Hayden Thomas explains that “people rarely give much thought to the pillows that they use, focusing almost entirely on the bed. However, if the neck is not supported properly when sleeping it can cause a whole range of problems.”
