Dr. Andy Chung of Forest Park Medical Center has come up with a new way to treat sleep apnea—a surgery that is often touted as the “missing link” of sleep apnea treatments.
The surgery prevents the tongue from blocking the air pathway during a person’s sleep.
“We place permanent structures which are anchored on the inside of the jaw bone, and that prevents the tongue from falling back while you are sleeping,” explained Dr. Chung.
This surgery is becoming more and more common for truck and bus drivers—professions that run strict screening for sleep apnea.
If this condition is left untreated, it can lead to problems in the heart and the lungs. It can even cause diabetes, erectile dysfunction, and cardiovascular failure.
The application of the surgery is subjective—meaning, some patients may need more than just one procedure to eliminate the condition.
