According to Veterans Affairs, the number of veterans receiving disability benefits for sleep disorders has increased by more than 60 percent in the past two years. The benefits now amount to more than $500 million annually.
More than 60,000 veterans filed to receive benefits for sleep apnea, a sleep disorders that causes a person to gasp for breath and awaken frequently. The condition is linked to drowsiness and cardiovascular complications.
One of the top contributors to the condition is obesity. However, in the case of the veterans, doctors say that the main factor in getting sleep apnea could be their over exposure to dust and smoke from place like Afghanistan and Iraq.
Veterans are four times more likely to get sleep apnea than other age demographics, says Max Hirshkowitz—director of the sleep center at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston.
