According to new research, middle-aged women who have sleep disorders are more prone to weight gain compared to their peers, who get eight hours of sleep a night.
Researchers from the University of Helsinki observed the sleeping habits and weights of over 7,000 women, aged between 40-60, through a seven-year period.
The results indicated that one in three women with sleep problems gained at least 11 pounds through the course of the study. Conversely, only one in five women—who had healthy sleeping habits—gained weight.
According to Peppi Lyytikainen, the lead researcher, the link between sleep disorders and weight gain could be the former’s effect on appetite.
Lyytikainen says that more research is necessary to solidify the link between the two conditions.
