ImThera Medical has been approved to begin human clinical trials in Belgium. The trial will focus on the company’s Targeted Hypoglossal Neurostimulation (THN) Sleep Therapy, which is aimed at treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
The company is expected to publish the results of its first clinical trial during the first quarter next year.
“We are excited to be involved in the clinical trial of ImThera’s innovative THN Sleep Therapy,” explained Dr. Daniel Rodenstein from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. Dr. Rodenstein is the principal investigator of the study.
Currently, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is still considered the best treatment for OSA. However, studies show that up to 50 percent of patients do not comply with the therapy.
ImThera Medical has developed a surgical option for CPAP delivering neurostimulation to the hypoglossal nerve to control certain muscles of the tongue.
“This technology has the potential to help a very large number of patients who cannot or will not comply with CPAP,” explained Dr. Terence Davidson, head of ImThera’s Medical Advisory Board. “Our mission is to help moderate-to-severe OSA patients enjoy better lives while substantially reducing health care costs related to serious complications associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.”
