A husband from Oregon has been sent to jail for assaulting his wife during sleep.
“He’s half asleep. It’s the weirdest thing I’ve seen in my whole life,” explained Randi Kearns. “He’s never been abusive to me in his whole life.”
Kearns called 911 at 4:00AM two months ago, when her husband—Adam—was arrested for domestic abuse.
“He’s not a violent man,” claimed Randi. “He’s never hurt me. He’s never even made me feel afraid.”
The couple has been married for ten years, and they rarely spent a night apart.
“I am trying not to break down but I can’t help it,” said Adam. “This is destroying me.”
Sleep disorder specialists say that sleep assaults are not new. In fact, studies suggest that some sleep disorders really trigger violent reactions. Startled sleep disorder patients can do everything from biting to punching.
For the time being, Mr. Kearns is allowed to see his three sons but cannot see his wife until the court says so.
“The punishment absolutely does not make sense,” commented Randi. “For them to keep us apart, it’s tearing up our family.”
Adam is diagnosed with a REM Sleep Disorder, which will hopefully clear his name in the near future. He says that he just wants to get his life back.
