An employee of the Indiana University Health LaPorte Hospital has allegedly stolen dozens of sleep apnea machine units, sold them and spent the money on his gambling endeavors. An arraignment hearing was held at the LaPorte Circuit Court for Cheryl Pender who faces felony theft charges.
The 44-year-old stands to serve anywhere in between two to eight years behind bars for her charges. Detective Joe Ferguson of LaPorte police department received a call from a supervisor of Clarian Health, IU Health LaPorte Hospital’s parent company.
Officials at the hospital had already been suspecting Pender to be stealing equipment from the sleep apnea unit, especially after a series of reported missing bilevel positive airway pressure machines from storage. The machines soon appeared at the Department of Veterans Affairs clinics in North Carolina and Oklahoma back in April. Phillips Respironics, which manufactures the machines, tracked the units and found irregularities in the hospital’s records.
