People with sleep apnea can be diagnosed with simple methods that can be performed at home, claims a recent study from University of Pittsburgh and VA Pittsburgh Healthcare.

The study showed that people diagnosed from home had similar improvement patterns compared to those who were diagnosed in the sleep lab. However, some experts remain vigilant about the home diagnosis.

“I think that’s pretty misleading,” commented Dr. Robert Ballard, the director of the Sleep Center at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s. “That’s something we see a lot in medicine. A new gizmo comes along and everyone starts using it.”

Dr. Ballard has conducted over 20,000 sleep tests, and he remains skeptical about the home treatment claims. Dr. Ballard says that his staff tested the portable home monitors and they needed several attempts because the equipment kept falling off.

“We ended up bringing them into a clinical research center to have a nurse watch them all night long so the equipment didn’t fall off,” narrated Ballard.

Ballard’s sleep test procedures included video monitoring, one of many things that are not included in home diagnosis tests.

Dr. Ballard concedes that home sleep testing technology will eventually catch up with the sleep lab, but for now, it has yet to do so.
