[PRWeb] — GateWay Community College will kick off a new certificate program in Polysomnography Technology (PSG) on May 24. This is the only such program in the state of Arizona. The PSG program will train pre-qualified students to monitor and analyze patients for disorders, such as sleep apnea.
According to the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists an estimated 50-70 million people in the United States are suffering from a chronic sleep disorder, leaving the job outlook for PSG Technologists excellent. Technologists work in a variety of patient care settings, which include Sleep Disorders Centers, located in hospitals and clinics. The American Association of Sleep Technologists reports that on average, Technologists earn $42,509 – $80,300 depending on certification level and years of experience.
“Students will receive hands on training in a state-of-the-art setting on campus and through clinical experiences at local sleep centers,” said Program Director Wendi Nugent. Upon completion of the program, students will be encouraged to apply for the registration exams provided by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist and /or the National Board for Respiratory Care.
There are still a few openings left in this session. The program is only open to graduates of an accredited Respiratory Care Program, such as the one offered at GateWay, AND those who hold either Certified Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist credentials.
