The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recently approved of Allergan’s Lap Band gastric banding device specifically for patients who weigh less than previous candidates. Allergan officials explain that under the recent approval from the FDA, individuals may now become candidates once they fail to make weight through other weight-loss programs and have a body mass index of 30 to 40.
Currently, around 37 million Americans have BMI’s that sit across that range with accompanying health conditions such as cardiovascular disorders, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Lap Band was previously restricted to candidates whose BMI’s were at least 35 and had a chronic health disorder, or a BMI of 40 and no accompanying medical problem.
The initial approval requires candidates to be at least 5-feet 6-inches tall, suffering from diabetes and weighing at least 216 pounds. Now, a candidate only has to weigh 186 pounds, according to the New York Times.
