A research study has shown that reduced alcohol consumption before sleep can help prevent apnea patients from snoring. According to study author Dr. Farhad Hakimi, limiting alcohol can help keep an apnea patient from snoring even without the aid of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device.
Hakimi studied over a period of 12 years patients, numbering more than 3,500, who are suffering from snoring and sleep apnea. He found a clear connection between lower blood alcohol levels and less snoring. Hakimi explains that alcohol contributes to snoring by relaxing tongue and throat muscles when a person is asleep.
The author also recommends freeing the nasal passages of blockage before going to sleep in order to ensure a healthy supply of oxygen to the brain. Hakimi advises that if these straightforward treatment forms do not help alleviate snoring, the patient should seek a doctor’s advice on using proven treatment devices such as CPAP.
