Doctors may not be able to diagnose children with sleep apnea, insomnia, and excessive daytime sleepiness. In fact, pediatricians are only able to diagnose these sleep disorders four percent of the time.

Parent need to be aware of the symptoms of these sleep disorders in order to identify them. Sleep is an important bodily function, especially for children who need growth and development. That’s why these conditions should not be taken for granted.

Here are common sleep disorders among children:
•    Difficulty in sleeping, especially among babies and toddlers
•    Obstructive sleep apnea and snoring
•    Unregulated body clock due to physiological difficulty

“It’s important for parents to put sleep on the radar,” says Lisa Meltzer, a psychologist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s sleep center.

Meltzer says that sleep disorders need to be treated and will not be resolved on their own.
