According to the National Institute of Health, 10 out of 65 adults suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It is a disorder which afflicts a person rendering him or her unable to breathe for certain periods of time during sleep. The pause in breathing is caused by collapsed tissues around the throat and lasts anywhere between a few seconds up to a minute.
The obstruction occurs several times each night, sometimes causing the patient to wake up. The disorder has already been linked to heightened chances of developing cardiovascular diseases, stroke, diabetes and even accidents as a result of extreme fatigue during daytime.
Researching treatment of the disorder is a couple of UC scientists who are investigating the Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation therapy via the STAR, otherwise known as Stimulation Therapy for Apnea Reduction. It is a device that can be implanted near a patient’s clavicle and delivers mild stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve in order to prevent obstruction.
