Obese patients that are diagnosed with sleep apnea will have a hard time eliminating their sleep disorder. Changing his/her lifestyle will not do the trick.

A recent study indicated that sleep apnea cannot be completely cured by exercise and healthy dieting—although, these habits would improve their sleep quality to a certain degree.

Dr. Maree Barnes (from the Institute for Breathing and Sleep at Austin Hospital in Australia) tested 12 patients who had an average body mass of 36.1. All patients had sleep apnea and Dr. Barnes found out that in order to completely cure their sleep disorder, they needed additional therapy.

“Although there was some improvement in sleep disordered breathing, it was not seen in all patients and was not proportional to the degree of weight loss,” explained Dr. Barnes.

Findings in a study conducted in Mayo Clinic (Portland, Oregon) indicated that a surgery called uvopalatopharyngoplasty is the most successful treatment for sleep apnea.
