Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder. The condition is usually indicated by pauses in breathing during sleep. It is linked to heart complications, obesity, and premature deaths. The bad thing is, most people who have it don’t even know they have it.
That’s why Chilton Memorial Hospital is offering a free sleep health screening to determine if a person has sleep apnea.
“Snoring is not just a nuisance for those around us, but a warning signal that you are putting yourself and others at risk,” explained Dr. John Penek, a board-certified sleep medicine and medical director of the Sleep Health Institute at Chilton Hospital. “Snoring is often an indicator of sleep apnea, which reduces air flow when you sleep. The human body goes into panic mode if it receives less oxygen. Blood pressure rises and the heart will become stressed.”
The free screenings include one-on-one visits from a Chilton sleep professional, allowing for a more individualized assessment.
