The American Trucking Association (ATA) will be sponsoring the first ever national conference on sleep apnea and commercial drivers, which will be held on May 12 in Baltimore.
According to trucking industry experts, sleep apnea testing and treatment (if necessary) will soon be a standardized practice for United States (US) drivers.
The conference will be hosted by the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA) and will feature panel discussions and presentations to assist truck drivers who are suffering from sleep apnea.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a condition where a person’s airway is blocked when he/she is sleeping. Its common symptoms are breathing interruptions, loud snoring, and non-restorative sleep.
The condition is prevalent among truckers and overweight individuals. Experts say that more than 80 percent of OSA cases go undiagnosed.
“The trucking industry continues to grapple with the tough questions and issues surrounding screening and treatment for sleep apnea,” explained Dave Osiecki, ATA Vice President of Safety, Security, and Operations. “This event is a significant step forward and we encourage industry stakeholders to participate.”
