New research suggests that the light emitted by the Apple iPad is linked to sleep problems for owners who use the tablet to read before sleeping.
The iPad uses a back-lit display instead of an e-paper, which is used by Kindle. The system is used to mimic printed and duller pages of books by reflecting light elsewhere.
Alon Avidan, a neurologist and associate director of the Sleep Disorders Center at UCLA, attributes the sleep effects to the back-lit display.
Avidan suggests that the light stops the release of melatonin, a hormone that allows the body to sleep towards the evening.
While the studies favor Avidan’s argument, there needs to be more research on the topic.
