The Federal Aviation Adminstration is looking into eliminating incidents of air traffic controllers sleep while on duty. The agency, as the industry’s safeguard against sub-standard operations, plans to put at the minimum two controllers in the control tower of over 24 airports to report for graveyard work.

As of current, the busiest airport in the entire globe is Hartsfield Jackson, and presents conditions that are very unlikely to induce sleepiness. However, in less busy airports with few plans taking off and landing, the soft lighting and wide open view of the runway at night is more than enough to trigger sleep.

Dr. Russel Rosenberg, Atlanta Sleep Medicine Clinic director, explains that “it should be no surprise to the FAA that people are sleeping on the job when they’ve been left alone in a tower at night,” adding that “they experience a sort of double whammy of sleep disorders and circadian rhythm or shift work disorder.”
