A new study found that adults suffering from arthritis are more likely to have sleepless nights. The study, published in the February issue of Arthritis Care & Research, also says that people suffering from depression and anxiety are even more at risk of developing sleep apnea.
National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Dr. Grant H. Louie and his team of researchers studied data compiled from the US by the National Health Interview Survey in 2007. They found various mediating and prevalent factors, and identified subgroups of adult survey participants who were at risk of suffering from sleep apnea. These subgroups consisted of people already suffering from arthritis.
Meanwhile, Louie also found that at least 23.1 percent of people with arthritis were at risk of suffering insomnia, while 16.4 percent of people without arthritis also fell at risk of having sleeping disorders. Louie explains that “patients with arthritis, especially those reporting pain or with depression or anxiety should be regularly be screened for sleep quality problems and have the causes of sleep problems treated appropriately.”
