A young mother stands in a sleep center worried about her son, who she claims is able to sleep normally despite restless behavior during the rest of the day. Her 6-year-old son, Jimmy, is being checked by pediatricians for having symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, otherwise known as ADHD.

Jimmy’s pediatrician firmly believes in what latest medical studies say is a link between behavioral disorders like ADHD in school children and their lack of sleep or other sleep-related disorders. The sleep disorder in question in Jimmy’s case is obstructive sleep apnea, referred to in short as OSA.

Similar studies from other countries provide proof that around 2 to 3 percent of school children suffer from OSA. The disorder is common among adults, brought about by collapsing soft tissues in a person’s upper air passage as muscles relax during sleep. As oxygen levels drop due to breathe obstruction, carbon dioxide levels rise and sleep is disturbed due to negative effects on the brain. In Jimmy’s case, ADHD may be symptoms of OSA manifesting during the day.
