In lieu with National Sleep Awareness Week, clocks are being put an hour in advance on Sunday morning to make people aware that they’re going to lose another hour of sleep. The campaign highlights both sleep deprivation and apnea as well as the importance sleep has on a person’s quality of living.
Canadian studies have pointed out that at least 26 percent of adults in the country suffer from sleep apnea. The disorder, also known as obstructive sleep apnea, causes breathing to stop while a person is sleeping. Experts believe that persons suffering from apnea may experience anywhere from a dozen to hundreds each and every night.
Meanwhile, Vancouver Coastal Health Lung Center respirologist Dr. John Fleetham believes that “if you have sleep apnea, you are up to seven times more likely to have a car crash. You are (also) three times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.”
